Artera is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to define, evolve, and scale their platform powering next-generation patient communication, with a focus on agentic AI and distributed systems. This role involves shaping platform architecture, driving technical excellence, and leading high-impact initiatives. The position reports to the VP of Engineering and requires a strong leader to architect systems, mentor engineers, and ensure platform resilience and performance.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a domain expert in backend architecture and distributed systems
• Drive company-wide architectural patterns and engineering standards
• Lead execution on complex projects
• Own cross-team architectural buy-in
• Design and deliver large-scale features
• Identify and eliminate instability and latency
• Mentor engineers
• Foster a blameless culture
• Partner with product and data teams
• Provide architectural guidance

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in STEM or equivalent
• 7+ years building and scaling cloud-native applications
• Experience with event-sourced, microservice, and distributed architectures
• Strong expertise in TypeScript/ES
• Advanced proficiency in SQL (PostgreSQL)
• Experience with asynchronous messaging systems
• Commitment to testing and observability
• Excellent communication skills
• Proven ability to lead and mentor
