Job Description

Quizlet is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead architectural decisions for reliability and operational excellence, focusing on optimizing performance, driving engineering velocity, and leading systemic architectural change. This is a hands-on role reporting to the Senior Director of Technical Infrastructure, requiring an onsite presence in San Francisco.

Responsibilities

• Lead platform reliability strategy to achieve 99.95% availability
• Define architectural approach for scaling core data systems
• Drive performance improvements across managed compute environment
• Architect internal platforms for developer velocity and CI/CD
• Drive reliability change through incident analysis and proactive monitoring
• Act as technical owner for cost-per-request metric

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in software development, site reliability engineering, or platform engineering
• Proven track record as Principal/Staff Engineer in high-scale platform role
• Experience scaling consumer-facing systems handling high RPS
• Deep expertise in data systems (Cloud Spanner, PlanetScale, BigQuery)
• Strong knowledge of Kubernetes (GKE) and Istio
• Proven ability to design and implement CI/CD pipelines
• Mastery in implementing monitoring using Datadog
• Extensive experience in cloud-native architecture on GCP
