Job Description

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join their R&D and equipment design team, focusing on building the next generation of thin-film deposition technology. The role involves leading the design and implementation of advanced R&D equipment, ensuring safe, reliable, and high-performance operation, and mentoring engineering staff.

Responsibilities

• Lead design and implementation of R&D equipment
• Define system requirements and drive design concepts
• Lead design reviews
• Generate and maintain interfaces with engineering subsystems
• Report project progress
• Work within a multi-disciplinary team
• Mentor engineering staff
• Drive projects and deliver outcomes

Requirements

• Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
• 15+ years of experience with 7+ years as a principal mechanical design engineer
• Ability to conceive novel solutions
• Expertise with 3D modeling (SolidWorks, NX preferred)
• Experience with FEA tools (COMSOL, ANSYS)
• Ability to select and qualify vendors
• Demonstrated leadership ability
• Strong communication skills
