Job Description

FreeWill is seeking an experienced grant professional to serve as a Grant Writing Subject Matter Expert (SME) to train, evaluate, and refine their AI models for grant writing assistance. The role focuses on providing 'ground truth' for AI learning, assessing AI-generated content, and establishing quality standards, rather than direct grant writing or client management.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the definitive standard for excellent grant writing
• Review and assess the quality of AI-generated grant content
• Create and maintain an annotated library of evaluated AI outputs
• Train and assess the performance of evaluation systems
• Establish quality standards and guidelines for grant writing
• Document best practices across different grant types
• Drive improvement in key performance metrics
• Align AI training priorities with product strategy

Requirements

• 7+ years of grant writing/proposal development experience for US nonprofits
• Proven track record of winning competitive grant applications or grant evaluation experience
• Deep understanding of grant proposal success factors
• Experience across multiple funding sources and grant types
• Versatility across programmatic/thematic areas
• Strong ability to provide actionable critiques of grant writing
• Experience identifying patterns in content and developing classification frameworks
• Excellent written communication skills
• Ability to create clear documentation
• Self-directed and comfortable with ambiguity
• Passion for nonprofit mission and impact
